Report: | First on court was the club captain and 2nd team captain, Ian Ross Griffin against the 3rd team captain. The fact that IRG hits the ball hard and provides entertainment is beyond doubt. Younger memebers and aspiring squash players should however note that there were aspects of his game that will not be found in the coaching manual. As the match progressed and slowly IRG realised that the inevitable defeat was not on the proverbial horizon but a lot closer, the more interesting became those parts of the game that cannot be coached. His barristerial skills were tested to the limit as witnessed by an amused crowd, when some rather oblique interpretations of the Squash Act 1898 (otherwise known as The Rules of Squash) were placed before the marker. End result IRG lost and the 3rds were one rubber up.
The matches that followed were rather prosaic by comparison but closer in style to the coaching manual. Andrew Dawes took on Ed Knox. Andrew is fit as Ed found out having won the second game but then seeing that his opponent was as fresh as he had been in the first game. The match consisted of Andrew seemingly extending rallies purely for his sadistic pleasure and that of the crowd in watching Ed practice his running skills. Ed never gives up and had little left physically by the end of this match. One all.
Next on Olly versus our very own "STIG". Some say that he played for the All Blacks, others say that he drinks the blood of small furry animals. What we do know is that he is unbeaten in this league or so my statistician tells me. The Stig of Dulwich was clinical and Olly to his credit recognised that after the match. I think his words were "I was totally outplayed". Not many players cause that reaction from Mr Ruff.
In the meantime Nic W versus Jeremy. Having beaten Jeremy in the league Nic was the clear favourite, moving swiftly to a 5-0 lead. But then something happened. There seemed to be no logical explanation for the turnaround but instead of hitting the ball a few centimetres above the tin Nic decided that he would do the opposite. I am reliably informed by IRG that Jeremy has this effect on his opponents and that is where the word "jezzered" originates from - but it might have something to do with the consistency of his squash. Jeremy won and the 2nds had won the contes.
An important match at number one ensued as any points the 3rds could win would help that movement up the table. Matt versus Steve H. At last a deserved victory to Matt who has come close in his previous matches and went all the way here. A dead rubber for the 2nds but 3 valuable points for the 3rds. Steve Harsum is not an easy opponent and it would have made for an interesting match had this been played before the outcome was decided.
Altogether an enjoyable night at Dulwich Squash Club with IRG and his dinner table anecdotes to round off the evening.
