Report: | Was this a case of Christmas in June? There was definitely a semblance of stuffing on the scorecard at the end of the match!
Dulwich 2 were struggling to put a team out in the week leading up to this match as our number 1 sent himself off to Stoke for some unknown reason, our team captain was said to be sunning himself on a Greek island, our number 3 was forced to attend a Bruce and Sheila do with the Ozzy High Commissioner and our 1st reserve proceeding to engineer stitches above an eye at the weekend! We ended up however with a strong team as a couple of the 1st team reserves agreed to lend a hand.
First up were the number 4's Brendan and Adam and this one was largely one way traffic with Adam hacking his way to a straight forward 3-0 loss to the new Dulwich recruit.
Next on court were the number 1's who are actually team mates in the Brixton team in the Surrey winter leagues. Did not see much of this but heard that Trev was not too happy with our smiley new recruit who ended up marking this one. The scores suggest an early push from Trevor with dwindling returns as the match wore on and in the end a good 3-0 win to Dulwich.
On the other court yours truly began the number 3's match in what ended up to be a 5 set match. Andy took the 1st 2 games without too much fight from his opponent but then came the fight back with the match turning about face with a hard hitting 9-0 game in the 3rd. The hard hitting continued and after a few nick shrieks along the way Dulwich claimed a 3rd win on the night and the match.
The number 2's were on court during this time and this one soon finished with another clear 3-0 Dulwich victory. Simon seemed out of sorts but Matt is playing well at the moment and seems to be getting close to full fitness so he we will no doubt get some action for the 1st team soon.
The chef on the night ended up being last on court in a 5 setter. He was so concerned with getting the food in his bag before leaving home that he ended up leaving his squash shoes at home! Andy was playing a tricky old timer and lost the first due in some part to having to play with Bob Jaffe's 10 year old scuffers. Andy stedied the ship in the 2nd game and then promptly changed shoes to a pair of brand new addys. This did the trick and he took a 2-1 lead. Team mascot on the night Jezza (Galah) Birkbeck was taken to one side during the mid game interval and order to put the food in the oven otherwise it would be bush tucker on the table at the end of the night. The match was then taken to 5 sets by some tricky cut shots by Milke but Andy was the fitter of the two and triumphed in the 5th set to give Dulwich a responding 5-0 win.
The grub turned out perfick and was enjoyed by all who stayed.
