Report

Report:First home game of the season saw us renewing hostilities with Blackheath II following two closely contested matches in the winter.

First up saw me taking on Sean, a player I have seen many, many times in the past but one I cannot recall ever having played ( probably due to the fact that Sean was always a much better player than me). However I suspect injuries, not to mention time, have taken their toll, but it was still quite a surprise if not a shock to see Sean down to play at 5. It took me the best part of 3 games to get over the shock and to realise that I might get something out of the game. Having lost the first two games for 4 points and being just a few points away from a 3-0 drubbing the tide turned and I managed to nick the third game 10-8. The next two went my way also and although they look good on the score sheet they were still damned hard. Two very tired players trooped off court, but only one was well chuffed.

Due to my lengthy endeavours on court I saw nothing of Graham and Danny's game. With two of the grittiest competitors around, this one was never going to be a classic. Graham confirmed this afterwards and said it was rather scrappy.....and no-one plays scrappy as well as Graham!! But who cares - another win and Bromley 2-0 up.

Having finally staggered up the stairs I did manage to catch the end of Steve's game with Andy. Blackheath seemed to have unearthed another promising player in Andy and he will certainly only get better with more matches under his belt. Steve was battling in the third game, having lost the first two for just 3 three points, only to lose it 10-8. I'm sure he will think what might have been, had he won that third game but Andy looked good for his successive 3-0 Priory win.

I then took up marking duties for the No.1s, beer in hand by this time, and watched Tony also notch up his second 3-0 win of the season. It was however considerably tougher than last week and Tom made him work for every point, and even took a sizeable lead in the third game before Tony stepped up a gear and took control again. It was an impressive display by the Bromley No.1 who is, after a recent injury, now moving well and striking the ball even better.

Last match saw another masterclass from Neil, who again cruised to another 3-0 win and again showed us what we have been missing all these years. It does seem though that his appetite for the game has returned and that he is making strenuous efforts to lose weight and get fit. All I can say is heaven help us all when he does. Apologies might seem in order here to Chris who turned up early as he had to get away, but ended up playing last, getting tonked and then having to leave without eating.

Finally thanks to Alastair and Alan for turning up and helping out with the marking. Much appreciated.
