Report

Report:A good win and a good points haul for Bromley, against our local rivals, which puts us within one point of the leaders. Sundridge were rather depleted for this match missing quite a few of their higher order players and Bromley were able to take advantage of this in securing a 4-1 win and 19 points.

The first two matches on could not have been more different. The game involving the no.5s saw Alan win comfortably 3-0 and in total control by the 3rd game winning that one to love. The no.3s on the other hand had a real battle. Rich looked good in the early stages playing some tidy squash and looking to keep the rallies going on a very warm court. Steve decided early on ( after about 4 points ) that this was not going to be a night to wear his new BCC (100% polyester)sponsored shirt and reverted to more familiar attire. However Rich took the first game and was soon game ball up in the 2nd. At this point Steve dug in and played really well to get it back to 8-8 only to make an elementary mistake and give serve back to Rich who said thanks a lot and served out to take the 2nd game. Both players were looking tired by this stage and Rich's more leaner appearance suggested he had the advantage. Not so, Steve came back really strongly and won the next two games easily to take the match into a 5th game, where he then led 6-4 and was looking good to complete a great comeback victory. Unfortunately his earlier efforts then caught up with him. So did Rich who was then able to hang on for the win. Great effort by both players.

Next on the no.1s where Tony made short work of Mr Lochner who earlier had made the mistake of voicing an unwanted opinion when Tony was marking. Tony had said that he hoped Mr Lochner was a better player than he was marker. Apparently not! 3-0 to Tony for the loss of only 5 points.

My game with Ben was played at a fairly leisurely pace. I would say due to the heat, others might say due to our respective lack of pace. But I am sure it was the heat that Ben succumbed to rather than the power of my squash and I was able to take the game 3-1 and ensure victory for Bromley - sounds good (captain's perogative).

Finally we had "save the day" Atkins on court who rounded the evening off with a comprehensive win over Andy who gave it a good go in the second game to take 7 points. Neil after a couple of 5 set matches recently was in no mood for another and rattled off the 3rd game against a visibly tiring Andy to take the game 3-0.

So of to the bar and to heaps of sausage, mash and beans. Man of the match goes to...............................................Leffen, if only for smearing strawberry cheescake over my belly and then inviting the barmaid to "clean it off". Answers on a postcard please for what happened next!!!!!!
