Report

Report:A hugely disappointing result this for Bromley against a Blackheath side who like us were not able to put out their strongest team. With Biggin Hill also losing on the night, this could have been the chance to jump into 2nd place and to try and catch OEs, who now look as if they are beginning to pull away at the top of the league.

Our result could however have been a whole lot worse but for a dramatic turnaround in the matches played between Andy and Steve. When they played earlier in the season Andy won 3-0 and with a bit to spare. After 2 games of this match Steve had only won 3 points and it looked game over. Indeed Sean who had marked those two games, before having to go on court to play, was quite disbelieving at the end of the evening when he learnt that Andy had lost. That Steve won could be down to a number of reasons. He clearly tried to mix things up - serving down the middle of the court for instance clearly bemused Andy - a few "discussions" with the marker helped to slow down the game and disrupt Andy's style of play. However it is fair to say also that Andy must have had his mind on other "more important" matters such as his impending nuptials this weekend. It may just be that at 2-0 up it suddenly dawned on him what he was letting himself in for .......and then went to pieces. Seriously though we all wish him well, and lets just hope that marriage doesn't get in the way of his squash!!

Most of the other dramas occurred with the no.5s where Alan and Neil battled out a 5 game game "thriller" culminating in Neil calling "one" at 8 all in the 5th. At this point serve exchanged hands several times as both players were doing their best not to win - the tension was unbearable. Alan finally made one mistake too many and Neil emerged victorious. In truth Alan should have won, having come back from 2-0 down to 2-2 and was then well up in the 5th. Oh well I am sure he will learn from the experience??

Graham's game with Amit was at least totally free from tension with Amit running out a comfortable winner only losing 5 points. Alan Briscoe said it was one of the easiest games, and the quickest, he had ever had to mark. Alan's game against Alex afterwards also was probably not the hardest he had ever had to play. He strolled through the first two games before allowing Alex a consolation in the third, but the bar was beginning to beckon and he rattled off the 4th game in style.

Last game of the evening saw Sean and I renewing hostilities after a 3-2 win for me when we played earlier in the season having come back from 2 down. Again in this match I was 2 down, but not unduly bothered and things started to look good again when I took the third game. The fourth game was very tight with Sean grimly battling away quite detemined not to let this one slip away again. What finally did for me though was with Sean 7-6 up and hand in, I managed somehow to win the point after one of those long rallies when all I did was retrieve... desperately. So what did I do after that - yep, served out of court. So after a few more half hearted rallies and a few violent thrashes into the tin it was game over and Sean had his revenge.

So well done to Blackheath and thanks to Neil for the grub

Oh yes and thanks a lot also to Gary for including me in his "team of the half seaason". I haven't won since!!
