Report

Report:Bromley's decline continued with this our third defeat in four matches, this time going down to Waterfront. Any early season optimism about another promotion after only losing one of our first 8 matches, is receding nearly as quickly as my hair.

Things started well enough with Steve playing really well to go 2 up against Simon, and Graham going 2-1 up against Paul (now sporting a very boring haircut). Back to Steve who quite possibly couldn't believe he was beating Simon and was waiting for the comeback which duly occurred. This eventually turned out to be the Mother of all comebacks as Simon not only cameback from 2-0 down in games but also from 7-1 and 8-2 (including 2 match points) down in the 5th before beating a very deflated Steve. So for the second time this season against us Simon has won 10-8 in the 5th having been match point down. We tried afterwards to think of suitable ways of describing him. Crafty, canny, deceptive were a few adjectives mentioned. We settled for bast*rd.

Fortunately Graham was able to hold off Paul to run out comfortably enough in the 5th and win to level the match. His holiday cruise obviously did him no harm, but with one of his sea legs shortly to go under the surgeon's knife we wish him a speedy recovery. We need winners at the moment.

Current form ran true in the next two games on court, with me at 5 losing again and Alan at 1 winning again. I will take this opportunity to thank Gary Barrett again for putting me in his "Team of the Half Season". Having briefly threatened in the 1st game taking a 7-6 lead and getting to 7 all in the second and going 4-2 up in the third, that was as good as it got for me and it proved a fairly comfortable 3-0 win for John in the end.

Alan as ever looked comfortable throughout his match even when losing the first game which he sometimes tends to do. Thereafter Dave huffed and puffed and even grunted but it was all to no avail as Alan smoothly went about his business of winning squash matches.

So all level and the final game on court at last with a rather unapologetic Manjit deciding to turn up with the little hand on the clock nearer to 10 than it was to 9. Alastair whose back was giving him a bit of trouble after a recent bout of energetic dancing (so he says......the tart) really didn't need a long wait to get on court but that was what he got. What he didn't need either was someone like Manjit who runs and runs, retrieves everything and scrapes (literally) everything back. But that is what he got, together with a 3-1 defeat, although if he played from the beginning how he played in the 3rd game, things might have been different.
