Report: | Bit of a strange evening this one with a couple of strange looking lineups. I am sure that Guy and I feel that more effort went into actually trying to get a team out than playing the match itself. I shudder to think what our 'phone bills are going to be. I was a little more successful than Guy who despite his best effort could only put out 4 players. Oh well all in a good cause, and I am sure all our team-mates greatly appreciate all our hard work. Possibly.
But for Bromley it was a good win with more valuable points to keep us on the heels of the division's top two. It was also an evening which was significant for the appearance of Alan Briscoe in a Bromley team, which is considerably better than seeing him appearing for the opposition, believe me.
Talking of firsts, it was Graham Lilley's first game of the season for us and he was up against Steve who was playing his first ever Priory match. 3-0 to Graham,in a rather one sided game as the scoreline suggests, and I just hope it doesn't deter Steve from playing future matches. I won't say a lot about my game suffice to say that the good bits were that I went 2-0 up in the first game, 3-0 up in the second game and 1-0 up in the third game. 3-0 to Dave and well played to him - far too good for me on the night.
The only part of Alan and Mark's game that I saw before being called up for marking duties was the first bit when Mark was full of running and went into a 5-2 lead. We all know that normally Mark is still full of running at the end of games as well. But he doesn't normally come up against players of the calibre of Mr Briscoe and judging from the scoreline it was all downhill (or uphill) for him after that point. 3-0 to Alan and that win together with the walkover at 5 ensured victory for Bromley.
Last on were Giles and Guy who were both more interested in whacking the ball around the court than moving themselves around the court, and with a lot of shots being played down the middle of the court the marker was kept busy with plenty of let calls to adjudge. Guy in particular, on finding himself 2 games down responded by whacking the ball even harder in the 3rd and it paid off as he took that game convincingly. A bloodied Giles however came back strongly in the 4th game as Guy tired and wrapped up a fine 3-1 win to give Bromley a 17 points haul for the evening.
Thanks to Mr Leffen for turning out, even though no opponent was available, and for marking a couple of games. Although he did make a point of having a game at the end with Dave and beating him - I don't know what he is trying to tell me!!!!
