Report: | Bromley approached this match with Biggin Hill with some trepidation as we were short of a couple of our higher order players and our opponents have been particularly strong in that dept this season. So it proved in this match, with Biggin Hill winning at strings 1,2 & 3 to claim victory and move to the top of the table at the season's halfway stage.
It was an unfortunate end to the match though, with the no.1 strings playing out the deciding game with the match score standing at 2-2. The game was quite a lively affair although Tony in particular was looking a little tense and not striking the ball or moving as well as normal. Having come from behind to win a tight first game, he then became very ragged in the second and Stuart took that for the loss of only one point. The 3rd (invariably the crucial game in any match), was much closer, but with Tony poised at game ball at 8-6 and in the middle of a rally he suddenly collapsed in a heap clutching his knee. Despite an attempt to carry on he did not, and was not going to, win another point and at 3-0 down in the 4th game he sensibly retired.
Not quite so much excitement earlier on in the evening with both Alastair and Steve succumbing 3-0 to the other Stuart and Simon respectively. Alastair, in between holidays, played quite nicely but Stuart always had too much in reserve. Steve was always on the back foot in his game, although raising our hopes in the third game by going 7-5 up. But it was not to be and it meant that Bromley only secured 1 point from our top 3 players. We did though record the most convincing win of the evening with Nurse Leffen only allowing James a meagre 4 points in their game. James claimed afterwards he hadn't played for 7 years!!!
My match with Dean was one of those games of 2 halves. I couldn't live with him in the first two, only getting 6 points. Thereafter it was a case of me hanging on as Dean started to tire and began to batter the tin. By the 5th game Dean was well and truly knackered and I was able just to hold things together enough to take the game.
So despite the result it was a good evening all round with the Biggin Hill boys proving to be good company. It was good also to see Mr and Mrs Gary Barrett and other Committee menbers in attendance.
The last remaining thing to say especially to all those who turned up last night, lost and then said they were going away on holiday next week to add to all of those already away is " What a ****ing liberty" |
