Report: | Having opened the season with two wins, Bromley's 3rd game was a trip to Woolwich to play our old friends the Waterfront Boys who were also boasting an unbeaten start to the season.
A bit of to-ing and fro-ing at the begining of the evening as Waterfront still weren't sure about their lineup and consequently the order of play. Tony rather reluctantly found himself on court first, but then was told to come off and then told to go on again. Not entirely impressed with all this, Tony went on to complete his 3rd successive 3-0 Priory win. Dave tried to stay with him and showed plenty of fight and determination and even tried to up the pace in the 3rd game. Tony was however too strong and always had the upper hand. The game offered up plenty of good rallies, with tight lengths and effective drops on show, but first blood to Bromley.
Waterfront were able to square the match on the other court however where Phil was showing a bit too much energy, and not giving Alan the chance to really get going and he was only able to play his own game in fits and starts - certainly more fits than starts on this occasion. So despite a mini comeback by Alan to take the 3rd game, Phil came storming back in the 4th to wrap up the match for a 3-1 victory. Almost made Phil's journey from Towcester worthwhile - only put that bit in to show I could spell toaster.
Next on, Steve was determined to put last week's defeat behind him and after a bit of a cagey start against John soon settled in to a good rhythm and quite quickly found himself 2-0 up. John was still full of running though and put up a strong show in the third game. It was nip and tuck to 7 all, with either player looking capable of winning it. Steve was beginning to blow a bit though, and was probably looking forward to a 4th game a bit less than John. It was proabably this that enabled Steve to find that extra bit to take the next two points and the match. 2-1 to Bromley.
Mike and Simon meanwhile were battling it out in a game that was always going to go all the way. Two vastly experienced campaigners, seen it all before and neither willing to give an inch. The fifth game had it all with Mike having several match points but unable to convert any of them. An enthralling match this one, although not exactly error free it was tense and good to watch. Simon was finally able to held his nerve at the death and take the match, and the clenched fist at the end showed how much he enjoyed the win. 2-2 and all square.
Last match pitted the slimline Manjit, fresh from a 10k run, against the not so slimline Neil, not so fresh from a dash from work in the West End. Neil made short work of the first game though taking it 9/3 and we sat back expecting another exhibition. Not so, Manjit won the second 9/1 and we all sat up a bit. Neil won the third also 9/1 and we all sat back again. The 4th game was completely different and was fiercely contested by both players. Neil was displaying his vast array of shots, but Manjit was getting them all back and was looking as if he could do so all night long. A few frowns were appearing on the Bromley faces but Neil came up trumps and nicked the 4th game 10/8 to win, and to give Bromley the match.
A thoroughly enjoyable evening, and the car was still in the car park and in one piece, at the end of it. More importantly Bromley's unbeaten start to the season was still also intact.
