Report: | Another 3/2 win for Bromley and for the second week running it was left to our No.1 Tony to go on last to play the deciding match. Fortunately for us he thrives on such situations and for the second week running he came off court with a 3-0 result in his favour. Young Phil gave him plenty to think about in the first game which could have gone either way, but it was always going one way after that especially when at the end of the second game Phil appeared to pull up with an ankle problem.
Earlier in the evening Ali, who by his own admission is struggling for form a little at the moment (think he neeeds a holiday - hasn't had one for a couple of weeks), went down 3-0 against Roald sporting his customary headgear. Ali pushed his opponent hard in the first game, but Roald was fairly comfortable by the end.
Then we had the Little and Large show with Steve looking quite diminutive up against the ex international basketball player Panji. As ever Steve scrapped for all he was worth in the first two games but was well beaten in the end.
The no.5s Graham and Andrew looked evenly matched and at times played some decent squash. A lot of the rallies however were played up and down the middle of the court, and with neither player always properly clearing the ball, there were plenty of let calls. This led to a fair bit of frustration all round including for me marking the game. Unfortunately, Andrew let his frustration get the better of him and at a critical point in the 4th game, I found myself (for the first time in over 25 years of team squash) awarding a penalty point to give Graham match point. Graham duly held on and took the match 3-1. Maybe my marking is getting worse or maybe I am just getting old and crotchety - not sure. Nonetheless I don't think a marker however bad he might be should be given verbal.
After all that I then had to go on court and play Rich. We reminded ourselves that the last time we had played I had won 10-9 in the 5th (partly due to a dodgy call in my favour at 9 all by the marker). I had to smile though when I then looked up at the balcony to see that Andrew had grasped the marking sheet and was looking down in a rather determined fashion.
However the game passed off without incident. The marking was exemplary and as in our previous encounter I managed to come from 2-1 down to beat Rich in another very close match.
