Report: | The oldest excuse going for losing a match but it was a severely depleted Bromley team that turned out for this match. Not having played Beckenham in recent memory we didn't really know what we were up against.
Mind you it didn't take long for Mike, on court first, to quickly find out that he was really up against it in his game with Ian. Mike threatened briefly in the second game taking a 6-2 lead, but Ian reeled him back in before winning that game and then taking the third for a comfortable 3-0 win.
At the same time I was on court with Nev who thought he was on for a bit of a stroll taking the first two games for just 3 points. The third game looked to be going the same way as Nev took a 7-3 lead. At that point I can only think he mentally switched off thinking the game was won as he rather casually tinned what should have been a winning shot to go to match point. This was followed by a succession of unforced errors allowing me back in to the match which then went all the way to a fifth and deciding game. More spherical assaults on the tin by Nev saw me go to 8-5 and match point. Nev was struggling to contain his frustration by now but still managed to produce some great winning shots to take the game to 8-8. All in vain though as I managed to sneak through to take the game 10/9 and the match. Nev's racket then exploded from his hand across the court. In to the tin surprisingly enough!!
So the match was all square at 1-1, but that was as good as it got for Bromley who lost all the other matches. Graham though looked to be going well against Geoff taking a 2-1 lead after 3 close games. Geoff was getting a bit exasparated with Graham's style of play which was preventing him from getting in the game and playing his shots. However rather inexplicably Graham's game then fell apart allowing Geoff to take full advantage who really got his game going and it was one way traffic after that with Geoff wrapping up the last two games for the loss of just two points.
Steve not for the first time this season found himself up against somebody who looked nearly twice as big as him. And again he fell short (sorry Steve)in this match with Rob. Despite winning the first game relatively comfortably he was always struggling after that. At 7-0 down in the 4th game he decided to stop and treat everybody to the sight of a manky toe which was giving him a bit of grief. It had the effect ( not intentionally of course) of putting Rob off his game for awhile and Steve was at least able to make the score look a bit more resepctable before losing the game 10-8. But it was match to Rob which meant the fixture had gone Beckenham's way.
The last game of the evening was probably the best, enjoyable to watch and for me to mark with absolutely no let calls whatsoever. What a pleasant change that is. It must have been the presence of a lady on court that was making everybody behave and play nicely. Cathy certainly played too nicely for Giles who despite playing some of his best squash for some time was always being asked to play one more shot. Cathy's powers of retrieving eventually wore down Giles who was a spent force after gamely winning the third game. Cathy was able to quickly wrap up the 4th for the match and send Beckenham home with a healthy 19 point haul for their evening's efforts. |
