Report: | A winning start to the season for Bromley in a match that was not decided until the final game of the evening played out by the No.1s.
Things had looked fairly good early on though for Bromley, with Mike taking a 2-0 lead largely through his trademark boasts at the front of the court which Mark was not reading at all. Similarly on the other court Alan was taking an early lead and looking as if he had too much guile and experience for his younger opponent. However, whereas Mike kept his focus and ran out a 3-0 winner, although only just winning the 3rd game, Alan went walkabout allowing his opponent to get into the game. The longer the game went on the more Darren's confidence grew and that together with having youth and fitness on his side saw him through to a 3/2 win.
My game with Greg could have been a repeat of the above with my opponent having the advantage from the point of view of age and fitness. All I have on my side is experience (and not all of that is good). Nonetheless after a shaky start, with Greg getting to game ball in the first, I decided that whacking the ball was not the answer and adopted the tried and tested tactic of the more "experienced" player and slowed the game down with lobs and drops. As a result Greg went on to pretty much beat himself through a succession of unforced errors.
On the other court Richard was living up to his name and was on this occasion far too sharp for Ali who was not allowed to get into his stride at all. 3-0 to Richard and the match to 2-2.
During the summer when we played at Cannons, Tony Davies went on and won 27-0. Up against Nick Wise this time, things started to take on a familiar look when Tony took the first game 9-0. I don't know whether Nick was aware of that previous result but he was obviously not going to have any of that 27-0 stuff and offerred up some strong competition in the next two games before going down 3-0. On a slightly contentious note the game could actually have finished a little earlier than it did, with Nick reacting with less than good grace to a decision given against him with Tony 8-7 up in the third game. Stricter marking might have seen a penalty point awarded. But I was quite enjoying myself marking the game and wanted it to go on for longer! |
