Report

Report:This was a welcome win for Bromley after 3 successive defeats. A result which should at least banish any thoughts of relegation this season, a season which started with some hopes of a promotion spot. A brief dressing room analysis last night highlighted the fact that every single member of our 9 man squad has at some time been out injured during the season.

Anyway enough of the excuses, last night's match opened up with Alistair and Gurkan playing out a 5 setter with the Bromley man coming back from 2-1 down to secure a good battling victory. It could/should have been a more straightforward win if his 8-1 lead in the second game hadn't been thrown away. Thanks to Neil for suppplying that particular observation.

I was on the other court with Jane in a repeat of our match earlier in the season when I again managed a 3-1 win. In another display of how to throw away a big lead Jane will be kicking herself after holding a 7-1 lead in the 4th game.

I was then on marking duty for the other 5 setter of the evening between Neil and Graham. Bromley's Neil had the better deal, marking on the other court where Alan well and truly demolished Vic for the loss of just 4 points. Nobody from Bromley will be surprised to learn that Alan enjoyed the win and spent a fair bit of time looking up at the gallery for approval as the winners flowed from his racket.

In the meantime Neil and Graham were doggedly battling it out with the honours even after 4 games. Nobody could have foreseen what then happened in the 5th when Neil, seemingly a little distracted by something or other, capitulated leaving Graham, as surprised as anyone, a 9-0 winner in the 5th and deciding game.

So with the match already decided Neil was able to go on, playing at 1 for the first time this season, with no pressure and looked pretty relaxed in winning fairly comfortably against a very competitve player who looked anything but relaxed. Neil's all round game and variety of shot proved too much for his hard running opponent who battled gamely throughout.

A satisfying 20 point haul therefore for Bromley on court followed by generous helpings of lasagne and beer in the bar. Lovely!!
