Report: | 'Knole Park may have 'peaked' this week. They fielded a full strength side (how many clubs can boast nominations 1 to 5 all turning out on the same night?) out of respect for Bromley CC - anticipating that some of the 56 New Eltham exiles who had found their way to Bromley would be there.
In the event, Graham Edwards's team could only call on the services of Tony Davies, which seems a bit unfair. Where have all those other New Eltham hotshots gone to?
As for the match - PJ had a comfortable win over fellow veteran Graham Edwards; Mark Fleming made heavier weather of beating Joe Stewart. The marker and supporters again had to suppress dismay as Mark mixed unbelievable drops, cuts, drives and boasts with appalling dumps and fluffs. The final margin of 40 points won to 30 lost was flattering, but at least there was only one audible expletive.
Gary Mitchell is working hard to get back to some sort of fitness resembling his former svelte shape. He still has some way to go, though, and may have to play a few more matches at 5 or thereabouts. His days of commanding a top three slot as of right will come again. For this week, he showed some of his old skills as he outwitted Brian Gardiner 3-0. Gary takes the ball very early or very late when he is playing well and the timing of his straight-arm boasts and cross-courts demonstrate a superior squash brain. It's good to have you back, Gary - if only you would stay after the matches to share the ambiance!
Jerry Staffurth was persuaded to commute from Bristol for the day. Negotiations were ongoing by mobile from the team bus on the way to the match. And, thanks to the efficiency of the British Railways network, he made it in time to see off Jamie Solomon 3-0.
At 1, Chris Sayer played his last match before jetting off to South Africa. A long match (around 90 minutes) saw Chris get the better of Tony Davies 3-1. The match probably turned on the first game which only just went Chris's way 10-8. Tony got his reward with a 9-6 game to level. But, after that , he probably made more errors than Chris at critical times. He will hope that Chris returns to the UK in time to make amends in the away tie.
Without their number one and possibly three from next week, it is difficult to see Knole keeping up this level of performance. So they will be on the lookout for any stray New Elthamians to boost numbers.' |
