Report: | Anyone arriving at RTW Squash Club at about 8.40 would not have predicted the outcome of this match, postponed from when arctic blizzards hit Kent. Mark was 1-2 down and struggling against a confident-looking Peter and Paul was 1-2 down against Jon whose drop shots seemed unreturnable even if reachable. Both matches were turned around by tough determination but here the similarities ended. Mark and Peter were like minds, jovial banter, and let-balls happily conceded, from start to finish, behaviour that poor Richard, oppressed marker of the other match, would have given his favourite racket for. It was just that Paul and Jon moved (or didn't) in ways that did not blend, and had styles of play that did not suit. Difficult marking decisions, though always fair, abounded and Paul, seasoned campaigner that he is, eventually ground out a victory. Peter, meanwhile, as he later agreed was gradually running out of steam.
The next two matches were over in a flash. Richard, even when he wrong-footed Brian (as he frequently did) had no reply to Brian's recovery shots in the form of his trade-mark whipped boasts or fast, low drives. Ron looked to be in for a tougher match with Stefan when the latter sprained his ankle at 7-7 and couldn't really travel after that.
It just remained for the two old adversaries to play the final match with potential spectators torn between catching up on Chelsea/Inter Milan in the Championship League, several FA Cup fixtures and frequent fill-ups at the bar. Naturally, they spurned all this to watch the tireless pair, Paul and myself, play our long, beautifully crafted, spell-binding, error-free rallies to conclude the evening on a spectacular high that could have put the Canary Wharf Classic to shame.
Finally, all thanks to RTWSC for a very warm and hospitable evening. |
