Report: | Many thanks to Sydenham for hosting a really memorable evening. It was a really close affair that could have gone either way right up to the end
First on were Darren and Dan on one court and Paul and me on the other. Darren said he felt out of sorts before he went on and didn't play his best. However, he still managed to level the game at 2-2 before finally losing in the fifth.
Paul and I have been playing each other for more than ten years and know each other's games inside out. Paul has got the better of recent encounters though so I was disappointed but not surprised to lose the first game 9-0. After that I got into it though and won the second game and the fourth to level at 2-2. The fifth was step too far though and ended up a repeat of the first. It looked all over for Cannons.
John went on against Richard at 2 and promptly went 2-0 down. We had no chance. But then John started clawing his way back, winning a game and then a second before taking the third fairly easily.
Meanwhile Gavin was getting the better of John Rowe. John is a very strong number 4 and I might have backed him to win but Gavin played really well. Well done Gavin.
So it was all down to Dave and John Munt at 5 with everyone watching and both sides cheering their man on. Dave went ahead in the first and served for the game only to lose it on a tie break. He was struggling with the slow courts (and a couple of decisions I made as marker that he was less than impressed with). In the end he took control though and ran out a 3-1 winner.
So Cannons won 3-2 in matches and 18-10 in points. The evening was rounded off with an excellent Thai curry. Thank you Sydenham. |
