Report: | After three defeats BCC were still looking for their first league win. Would this be the week?
First on were Ross and Kevin. Only saw the first two games of this, but when I left Ross won the first two games and was looking good for a 3-0. Looks like he went to sleep in the third as Kevin took it 9-2, but Ross awoke from his slumber in the fourth to take the match 3-1.
On the other court were Ian and Mark. If ever there was a crash, bang, wallop match this was it. Each time Mark served he left a dent in the front wall plaster. Although he hit the ball hard his shots were a bit wild and loose which allowed Ian to pick them up and hit back with some of his own wild and loose shots. Ian slowly started engaging his right arm with his brain and played the more subtle shots to take the first game. The second game reverted to crash, bang, wallop and went to Mark. In the third Ian hit a series of back court drops that Mark wasn’t able to read and took the game 9-4. Although Mark pushed Ian all the way, Ian always had the better quality winning shots and won 3-1. I never imagined I’d ever say this, but Ian won a match using his brain rather than his brawn.
Next on were James and Shane. This was the best performance from James since his return to squash after a two year absence. (He finally stood up to the wife!). From what I saw James was playing steady length shots and waited for the right moment before going for the winner. James won the first two games comfortably, but it took a fluke miss hit shot to win the match 3-0 after having five match balls. Not the classic finish James was looking for but who cares when you get your first win after more than two years.
Didn’t see any of Dan and Graham’s match, but scores suggest Dan is still not fully recovered from the week in Spain as he lost 3-0 although the games were fairly close. Perhaps Dan would be better off playing point for point. That way he might get to win his first game for the team!
Last on were Alan and myself. Last time Alan and I met was when we were sharing a room in Edinburgh for the Scottish Open doubles competition. Can’t remember who’s turn it was last to “bite the pillow”, but our pre-match chat was more about our latest injuries now that we are both the senior citizens of our respective teams. The first match was a close tense affair which I just nicked 10-8. In the second I thought I’d put in a lot of boasts just to see how Alan coped with his strapped up calf muscle. He must have been faking it as he easily got to every ball to take the second game 9-1. Learning from that mistake I went back to basics and just edged the next two games to win the match 3-1. Not a classic but when your looking for your first win you take what you can get.
Dan decided to set up a losers table when sitting down to the meal. Although he was on his own for a while he was eventually joined by Alan although the other losers declined the offer.
To improve his fitness it was suggested that Dan might want to be towed home behind Ian’s car, but given the state of his Dad’s ex-jalopy and the size of Dan, I’m not sure it would have had the pulling power.
