Report

Report:After last weeks triumph could BCC achieve two wins in succession without their talisman, Ian “The Apprentice”?

First on was Paul and Michael or, given the age gap, granddad versus grandson. Having not previously won a match, Paul was reminded of the expectation on him to get his first win. Things weren’t looking good when he was 2-1 down in games and 7-2 down in the fourth. However, granddad Paul rolled back the years to take it to a fifth game decider. At 7-2 up in the fifth granddad Paul could almost taste his first victory, but then he started to tense up and Michael came back to take it to a two set tie breaker. The tension was just too much for poor old granddad Paul and he lost by the narrowest of margins, 9-10 in the fifth. Silly old fart.

On the other court was Dan and John. Dan started the better and took the first two games, but John took the next game as Dan played some iffy shots in between some good ones. There was some long rallies early in the fourth game that seem to drain John more than Dan, so whenever John won back the serve he made sure that he got his breath back by increasing his pre-serve ball bouncing to even greater numbers. However, Dan wasn’t to be denied and won the match 3-1 to take his unbeaten run to four matches if you count the Tunbridge Wells match when Dan managed to get his opponent to walk off court.

Next on was new boy, Lewis, and Matt. Keen to impress his new team mates, Lewis started off with controlled tight squash. Although Matt also played some good quality squash, the new boy always had the edge and won 3-0 in spite of Mr Leffen’s marking. Still not sure if the new boy has what it takes to be a member of BCC’s third team squad, so I might extend his trial to next week before coming to any firm decision.

Didn’t see any of James and Steve’s match. Although James won 3-1 he said it was close and could have gone either way. A bit like his driving.

My match with Paul was a bit of an anti-climax. Paul arrived late as he had been at the hospital where his wife was about to give birth, but he did the right thing and left her to come and play squash. Paul was also suffering from an eye infection that meant he sometimes lost the flight of the ball when I hit a cross court shot. Needless to say, I had a comfortable win.

So although the absence of Ian “The Apprentice” wasn’t missed on the squash side, he was missed in the bar as we had no one to ridicule. Fortunately granddad Paul decided to wear his obscene clown lookalike shorts which provided some amusement.
