Report

Report:Knole Park picked up a useful 10 points, as a perky Bromley side provided the overdue banana skin for a complacent Knole.

Knole got off to a bad start when the manager allowed two of his stars the day off - Sayer for winter sports, Mitchell for unspecified reasons.

Worse was to follow - as Richard Jennings recovered from his long illness to return at No. 2 for Bromley.

The match itself was almost lost after the first two rubbers. Jerry Staffurth found Richard's hard hitting and silky touch a handful and apart from a second game hiccough, always looked second best.

Chris Morgan (unofficial excuse flu)was nevertheless sharp in the first three games against low-in-the-order Graham. Chris could not keep up the feverish pace and relapsed to lose the last two.

Rest is a good medicine, as John Creek - rested for most of the season - did not need his bus pass in a splendid victory for Knole to keep the tie alive.

Mark Fleming recorded a record seven tins in the first game, before he started to hit up. Jamie Soloman recognised class soon afterwards and hoisted the white flag.

So, all down to PJ and Tony at 1. PJ nicked a tight first 9/7. Then seemed to tire and slow, allowing superfit Tony to cruise the next two. At 1-8 down in the fourth, it looked all over for PJ and Knole, but a little more effort and some good squash saw him claw his way back to 7-8. As PJ lunged for a shot in the next rally, a 'little nudge' on Tony allowed the latter to appeal. The subsequent decision ('that could never happen in siccond ligg') took the last bit of stuffing out of PJ and the next point was decisive.

On the positive side, the defeat for Knole gives the chasing pack (Acacia Hall) a glimmer of hope and keeps the competition alive.

And the Knole ('Player') Manager has reaffirmed his squad rotation and holiday policy. 'I haven't spoken to 'Sol' Sayer yet, but I believe he is fine. He will be back in training next week.'
