Report

Report:After the previous two weeks 5-0 drubbings, BCC were entertaining promotion hopefuls, Blackheath.

Ian “The Apprentice” and Roald “Road Runner” looked like they were going to have one of those long matches judging by the very first rally that seemed to go on and on. However, “The Apprentice” steamed ahead in the first game 6-2 only to let “Road Runner” back in to lead 8-6, but “The Apprentice” clawed it back to nick it 10-8. The “Road Runner” made a lot of errors in the next two games to allow “The Apprentice” to win the match 3-0.

Didn’t see Dan and Sean’s match, but a good win for Dan considering he lost to Sean the last time they played. Not sure if the new blissful domestic arrangements with Mrs Sweeney has helped Dan’s game, but it certainly has put more of a strain on the stitching of his tee-shirts.

As Blackheath were missing their usual number 5, Phil went on with Blackheath “club player”, Nico. Expecting a comfortable win, Phil was almost suicidal after losing this match 3-0 and once again was talking about retiring. Anyone want to buy a Wilson Hammer 120 racket? Strings hardly used in the centre!

Fresh off the plane form Turkey I wasn’t confident of getting a result against Andy. At 2 games down it looked it was over bar the shouting. However, I had something to prove because I felt that the main reason I lost to Andy last time was more down to Blackheath’s infamous courts than the quality of the squash. As Andy took his foot off the peddle in the third game I got back to level it at 2 games each. I was expecting a tough fifth set decider, but managed to win it fairly comfortably.

Because James’ broke his strings during the warm up (another off-centre shot), he started his match with Kevin using Phil’s now redundant racket. James won the first two games comfortably hitting some tight drop shots - something this racket had never experience before. High in confidence James took the lead in the third and had several match points including one where Kevin was on his knees at the back of the court leaving James with the easiest of shots to win the match. However, somewhere in the deep reaches of James’ peanut brain, he decided the best option was to hit it straight back to Kevin and allow him to take the point instead. From there on Kevin dragged himself back into the match and remarkably fought back to win the match 3-2. As this is now James’ third 3-2 defeat on the trot I think the nickname “Choker” seems appropriate and he can’t even blame the racket.

So a win and a end to the 5-0 drubbings. I’m sure it won’t take long to talk Phil out of all this retire nonsense, but I’m not sure he should be left in charge of the team again!
