Report: | Who would want to watch Spain beat Portugal or a replay of Venus Williams being beaten by another-E-European-bimbo when Blackheath 2 versus BLTSC 2 (live) was on offer? First blood to Blackheath when Nico overcame a gallant Gary (11th hour substitute) in a match I just missed due to late-running meetings [Sorry League Secretary, I know Tuesday evenings are sacrosanct.] Second blood, or rather sweat, also to Blackheath as Kevin won through vs Mark, he of the half-century, whose tinned drops in the 4th game were as much due to Kevin's readiness to pick up anything as to the hot, sultry conditions. Things started to improve for Bromley thereafter: Ron, keen to avenge a rare loss last week, made Sean sweat hard for every point and the marker (me) sweat hard for nearly every let-call. Meanwhile Tim and Dan were evenly matched on the other court, both drained by the 3rd or 4th game. Tim, almost a hero when he called 'one' at 8-8 in the 4th and then gained match ball, transformed to a t**t on tinning a certain winner and proceeding to lose the game. By the 5th, even though Tim was carrying an injury, a tired Dan was reduced to immobility and the matches were soon 2-2. Enter canny Keith against unpredictable Kevin for the decider. No probs for the first two games: Kevin was on song and Keith didn't know where the winners were going. In the 3rd it was clear that Kevin's brain had launched a space mission and it was just a matter of whether this was to be a quick Columbia shuttle or a Voyager 3. Luckily (thanks Houston) it was the former and Kevin resumed control to win the 4th by some margin and the evening was Bromley's (just). Sorry about the meal boys (a BA reject) but Mark's birthday cake was a nice final touch. |
