Report: | A variety of factors combined to upset the form book. Rob and I were first on and before long I was into my intimate relationship with the left side-wall, touching it, stroking it, very occasionally driving tightly along it and, usually unwisely, trying to boast off it, all because of Rob's relentless consistency of length and width. A close match nevertheless but unfortunately for Bromley Rob won all the games. Paul and Alan were meanwhile contrasting their styles, Alan with his serves that can be unreturnable at times and Paul who enjoys the cut and thrust of longer rallies. The home conditions definitely favoured Paul this time. Ron won fairly easily and although Guy had upped his game by the 3rd, it was too late by then. Paul vs Brian had three phases. At the start Brian ran around to retrieve almost everything, then Paul picked off the points with well-timed drops. In the 4th however a tangle of limbs aggravated Brian's knee injury that impaired his movement and the last game was forsaken in favour of an ice-pack. So the result lay with Mark and Gavin. First Mark and then Gavin took the initiative, Gavin becoming more consistent as the match wore on. Mark hauled back to 8-8 from a 4 or 5 point deficit in the 4th when a disputed call by Gavin broke Mark's rhythm (ok then, yes, as marker, it was my fault) and Gavin won the match for Nuffield Health. All the more credit to Nuffield that although they were not their strongest line-up, everyone seemed to play above themselves. Well done! The only consolation for Bromley is that we slide into the lead in Div 5, but not by much. |
