Report: | First off were Mark and Jim, similar styles and closely matched, at least for the first two games. Then Mark found better length as Jim's stamina faded. The opposite was happening with Dan W and Tim on the other court. For two games Dan edged ahead mostly by wrong-footing Tim at critical times. Then, with better length and more confident drops, Tim pulled back to 2-2 and was set to win. However, Dan found renewed energy while Tim's was exhausted, with the inevitable consequence.
Paul trounced Ron in the first game, due entirely to a duff match ball apparently. Once this was changed, Ron was a different man, lively as a cricket on heat. Paul's inch-perfect boasts nearly won him the third game but after that Ron resumed command. Nick took a while to get into his stride - Richard always liable to disrupt a player's rhythm - but then moved too well and used the court too effectively to be in danger again. Dan C and Paul had the most brutish duel, not that there was any unpleasantness - they both moved in for shots for which weaker brethren might have asked for, but were agile enough to negotiate the situation and recover. Hard-hit, deep drives characterised their play, but the crucial difference was Paul's boasts and occasional drops. Dan's frustration cost him two broken rackets but his demeanour suggested that this was a good night. Or maybe he was already looking forward to some excellent traditional fish and chips. |
