Report

Report:Please note that the submitted order for Parklangley 4 had Gerald and Andy the wrong way around. Gerald is number 2 for the season as he was in the winter. This nomination error was discussed with our friends at Fitness First who were happy to play our team in the correct line up.

The first game of the season was met with a fair degree trepidation by Parklangley’s best looking and most lady-pleasing team as they were facing a strong Fitness First side. First up was Mike and Andy at 5. A very close match with both players starting the season with some good shots. Very close games in 1 and 3 and while Mile will feel unlucky not to win Andy won the crucial points as was able to power on in the 4th. PL 0 – FF1.

On the other court Gerald continued his good form from the winter against Peter who struggled to handle Gerald’s deep and dying shots and tight lengths. Peter had opportunities to get into the game and impose himself on it but found the tin a couple of times too many at crucial periods to enable Gerald to build up a lead in each game and take it home. PL 1 – FF 1

The number 3 and 4s then went on and the standard here was very high, some very close games and excellent rallies between the two pairs. After a close first game against Terry, Andy may have thought it was his day as he took the 2nd game fairly easily, it was not to be however as Terry upped his pace and some excellent winners enabled him to close out the game. PL 1 – FF2.

Trev and Darren played out the game of the evening with a 5-setter. Swinging one way and then the other both players had opportunities to take the match although luckily for Parklangley ,and their legion of fans, Trevor was able to keep the ball far enough out of Darren’s reach enough times to take the match. Some excellent winners from Darren would have him thinking he might have been able to take this one and it will certainly be a keenly fought battle in the second half. PL 2 – FF2

Last up then, and to decide the night, were the number 1s. Kevin, insulated by his winter belly, managed to find a bit of form (the first time in a while his team-mates would say) and played some nice stuff in the first two games. George hit a number of winners but a high risk approach to shot making saw Kevin rack up some points in quick succession. The efforts were beginning to tell in the 3rd with George managing to find an extra bit of fitness to pull a game back. George continued this form into the 4th and at 7-2 up a 5th game beckoned. Kevin managed to drag a few points back and a few errors from George saw the Kevin push on and take the game. PL 3 – FF2.

A high class and enjoyable opening to the season with Fitness First, the standard of these leagues again promises to be very high.

Cheers
