Report: | Ian was expecting to play Mark “Smash it as hard as you can” Walsom, and was relieved to see instead that he was playing Phil. Ian went into a comfortable lead but then felt a twinge in his knee so opted to stand at the back of the court. Fortunately Phil didn’t realise and obliged by hitting everything to the back wall. Eventually the penny dropped and Phil started to drop at the front of the court and took the first two games. In the third Ian realised that he was being a bit of a tart and that there was nothing wrong with this knee and went onto roll off the next 3 games to win the match 3-2.
On the other court were Ali and Scott or should I say “Old Man” and “Young Whippersnapper”. As you’d expect, Ali had the squash brain but Scott had the squash legs. Like his prodigal son, Ali lost the first two games, but as Scott began to tire Ali’s squash brain started a come back. The decisive point was in the fourth game where Scott had match ball, but Ali snatch victory out of the jaws of defeat and then went onto take the fifth game to win the match. As he left the court, although Ali’s brain knew where the door his legs had other ideas and made him wobble the long way around.
In the early rallies of Dan and Shane’s match both seemed content on smashing the ball as hard as they could. Dan’s better shots took over and won the first two games comfortable. As I went on court I told Dan to keep playing as he was and to make sure he won 3-0. Afterwards he told me that he only just managed to win 10-8 the third after being 2-7 down. Same old Dan.
James (or should we call him Mr Fortnightly) had a relatively easy 3-0 win against Kevin who gave away too many strokes with his lose shots.
My match with my one-time Scottish Open doubles partner, Alan, was a hard match. I took the first game but Alan upped the tempo and took everything early leaving me groping around the court. At two games each I was confident of winning as Alan had previously told me he’d lost most of his matches 2-3. Obviously a bit of kidology that worked as Alan took the match 3-2.
During the meal I could see Old Man Ali starting to wilt and nod off from his evening’s exertions. To cover he’s tiredness he left early with that old chestnut – “Got to go now and see the sister-in-law”. Whatever.
