Report: | Prior to the start of the match I was predicting a 4-1 win for BCC. (I won’t say who I thought might lose), but it came down to a nail biting last game of the last match.
Ali asked to go on first with Steve as these days he is no longer able to keep awake beyond 9pm. At one game each Ali was in a commanding position to take a 2-1 lead but he hit a couple of tentative shots that let Steve back in to win the game. In the fourth Steve was 8/6 up and serving for the match but put the serve down. Ali took full advantage and fought back to level it 2-2. Realising it was nearing his sleep time, Ali steamed through to win the fifth.
Didn’t see any of Graham and Fraser’s match, but scoreline suggests a comfortable win for Fraser. I guess Graham is still recovering from sea cruise lag.
Again, didn’t see any of Keeley and Matt’s match, but it would appear Keeley just ran out of steam and lost it in the fifth. Not bad for someone who hasn’t played since January.
My match with Ross was a tough battle. At one game each I won the next game 9/0 and thought I was going to close out the match, but Ross hit a string of winners to level it at 2-2. It was nip and tuck in the fifth, but at 4 each I took a decisive lead and went on to win the fifth 9/4.
So at 2 matches each it was down to Dan to quickly polish off Paul to at least win the match for BCC 3-2. However, with Dan you can never assume anything even though he was 2 games up and cruising. In the third Paul’s floating serves and half hit drop shots started to get to Dan and he went 7/2 down. Having re-focused, Dan got back to basics and when he levelled it at 7/7 the crowd thought there was only one outcome. Never assume anything with Dan. He lost it 9/7. Similar story in the fourth meant that the match was to be decided on the final game. At this point both my nerves and my sprained ankle (thanks Ross!)couldn’t bear to stand and watch any more so I went off to have a shower. It was left to Mr Phil Groves to deliver the news to me in the shower room (I must speak to the authorities about him!) that Dan had won, but only after coming back from 2/7 down. Never assume anything with Dan. |
