Report: | After a 5-0 drubbing at their place, BCC were looking to make a better fist of it this time even though they were without their talisman, Ali “Old Man” McMeckan.
Number 3’s - Richard initially took Dan by surprise with his speed and agility around the court especially for a man with a head full of grey hair. After Dan lost the first game 9/0, I wondered whether it was worth sharing some much needed advice as it usually goes in one ear and out the other (probably because there’s nothing to stop it). However, this time Dan took the advice onboard and the second game was much closer with Dan just losing 8/10. The tactical change started to pay off as Dan won the third. The critical point in the match came when Dan was 4/7 down in the fourth and felt Richard shouldn’t have been awarded a let. Fortunately this helped to galvanise Dan and he won the next six points to take it to a five set decider. Still on a high, Dan when into a 6/0 lead and despite giving Richard a couple of chances to get back, Dan stormed through to win 9/4.
Number 5’s - Only saw a couple of rallies of Paul & Scott’s match, but from what I saw I thought Paul was playing well so was surprised to hear he lost fairly easily 3-0. Oh well, there was still his marking to look forward to!
Number 1’s - With Jack and myself already having our excuses if either of us lost (Jack’s arm and my bad back), the very first rally was probably one of the longest I have played this summer. Jack went into an early lead in the first game but I just managed to dig in and win it 9/7. As Jack mumbled something about the game being “boring” as he left the court, I knew then exactly what I needed to do to beat him. 3-0 to me.
Number 2’s – Didn’t see any of Keeley & Daniel’s match but score line suggests a slow start by Keeley but in the second and third she was showing signs of getting back to her best after her time out. As she’s got a stack of friendly’s lined up before our next match, I can’t use this excuse any more.
Number 4’s – So at 2 rubbers each, for the second week running for BCC, the match would be decided on the final rubber and Paul was marking! I got to this match when James had already won the first 2 games. There was a delay between the second and third game as Graham decided he needed a toilet break and blamed the positioning of the toilet from the court for his long absence! Having got his breath back, Graham took the third game 9/3. (Next time I’ll put a bucket outside the court). As neither player seemed capable of hitting a tight winning shot, the outcome of the match was going to boil down to which one made the more mistakes - James or Graham or Paul. Fortunately James made fewer errors than Graham (and only a few more than Paul) to win the match for BBC. In summing up his marking performance, Mr Al Lef said, “At least your marking is better than your squash”.
So a good win for BCC and a miserable night for Paul who must have also suffered a power cut at home given the state of the heavily creased attire he wore in the bar. |
