Report: | Its mid-summer and BCC were inevitably short of players but fortunately we were able to draft in James, the first team’s number four.
Graham & Mike - Close first game with Mike getting caught out by Grahams’ deft drop shots, but at 6-8 down Graham reverted to type and hit his serve out and gave Mike the opportunity to win the game. Thereafter it was mostly one-way traffic as Mike won 3-0.
James v Trevor – On paper this looked like it was going to be a long hard battle between to players who liked to run a lot, and so it proved – well, for the first two games anyway. Trevor took the first with his harder hitting forehand and James took the second with a lovely fluke at 8-8. From then on James’ must have been thinking about his holiday the next day and that he hadn’t even packed yet. As he was mentally ticking off his list of things to take, g-string, mankini, etc, etc, Trevor ran away with the next two games to win 3-1.
James v Kevin - James must have thought he was in for a confidence boosting win given his bad run of form of late for the 1st Team. However, Kevin had other ideas. I only saw the first game, but Kevin was far sharper than James who probably thought he would be able to cruise around the court. 1/9 to Kevin. James must have stepped up a gear in the second as he won it 9/5, but was brought back down to earth as Kevin won the third. By all accounts Kevin was now tiring and James took the fourth 9/0 and won the fifth 9/6. Not the cruise in the park James was expecting for a division three match. Mind you, James is getting on a bit now so perhaps he should consider stepping down a team!
Me v Gerald – A nondescript match. I had my usual slow start and lost the first then won the next three games comfortably to win 3-1. More importantly my win meant that the match was tied at two rubbbers each, so it was down to the number three’s to decide the outcome of the match.
Dan v Andy – I joined this match as Dan was already one game down and down 8/5 in the second. However, Dan managed to claw his way back to win the second game. At this point I went off for a shower and returned to find Dan 2-1 up in games and in a winning position to take the match. But don’t forget, this is Dan. From a winning position Dan decided to play a few ill-timed boasts and a show boat high boast shot and lost the game. So once again, the outcome of the match would be decided on the final game. It was nip and tuck early on then Andy hit four straight winning serves to take a 6/2 lead. Dan hit back and had match point at 8/7. After saving the first match point Andy then inexplicably stopped mid rally claiming a double hit by Dan. As no foul shot had occurred, Andy lost serve to allow Dan to take the game and match.
As usual the food was plentiful and good quality. We even had waitress service so might try playing on Thursday more often.
In spite of Dan waxing lyrical about his newly found fitness because of his loss of weight, this didn’t stop his tucking into second helpings and chocolate cake. His target of getting down to 15 stone is now even further away.
We left for the evening with Kevin still banging on about “ringers”. Good job I didn’t play the first team’s number 1 or 2 otherwise I don’t think Kevin would ever get over it! |
