Report: | Given that we only managed to win two points in first half fixture and that I was not playing this match due to an injury, I was expecting a thrashing in this return fixture. However, things started to turn for the better when I received a text in the afternoon saying that Biggin Hill only had four players. At least we were guaranteed three points. Things got even better when I arrived to find Biggin Hill were also without their number one. Maybe we could even double our previous points tally.
Dan and Nick had some great rallies in the first two games. Only difference was that Dan made more mistakes so lost them both. Nick started to tire in third letting Dan back in, but in the fourth Dan started to tire and when that happens it’s usually not long before it’s all over. And so it proved to be but at least it took the team’s points tally to four.
Ross v Dean - Since returning to the team from his sabbatical due to his shotgun wedding, Ross has shown a remarkable improvement in his stamina and concentration on court although he still has the same pot belly. Despite a blip in the third, Ross won the match 3-1. Perhaps Ross should get married and have babies more often. Points tally now reached the dizzy heights of seven.
James v Simon – Didn’t see this but seems like James is still in holiday mode as he crashed out 0/3 to Simon. So, still seven points but I wasn’t complaining.
So at 2 rubbers each is was down to Stu and Keeley. Buoyed on by his watching wife/partner and daughter, Stu strolled through the first game 9/0. Although Stu then won the next game Keeley was showing signs of her game improving. In the third Stu went 8/3 up and was serving for the match. Whether he was playing up to the crowd/family I don’t know, but from here on poor old daddy Stu fell apart as Keeley’s game went from strength to strength. Having come from behind to win the third game, Keeley then won the fourth 9/2 to take it to a fifth set decider. There were some great rallies and it was nip and tuck, but in the end a superb performance by Keeley was capped by a great win.
Stu didn’t show too much emotion after losing but his daughter showed her disappointment by giving daddy the loser “L” sign as taught to her by Mr Al Lef. I think it will be some time before the family are invited to a match again.
So, Biggin Hill’s unbeaten record gone and 15 points for the BCC. Heaven.
In the bar the mystery of the funny smell was uncovered as the food was steamed fish, cauliflower cheese and mash. Sounds like a strange combination, but it was gobbled up by all. Even Keeley had some although she insisted she didn’t do fish.
In response to Keeley’s question about how his diet was going, Dan remarked on how well he had done to resist the cake. Maybe so, but after two enormous plates of fish, cauliflower cheese and mash there wasn’t much room left anyway. |
