Report: | PRM's recurrence of a granulated spittle condition and KP's usual summer uncertificated absences meant that there were unfamiliar lineups on both sides.
Both captains appear to have 'juggled' their nominations this season - perhaps to allow some of the older sacrificial sheep to take the heat off the younger players. As it turned out, though, this had the effect of evening up the contest, with some well-matched contests.
KP got off to the worst possible start, going 2-0 down after Tim's steady self-taught driving style failed to cope with Tommy's exuberance - and then JJ allowed his sympathy for the veteran ascetic Ray to get the better of his own ruthless nature. With Gary not having beaten Brian since 2000 - when Brian was just out of school - the omens were bad.
Gary, however, has been on a hot streak of late. Since coming back from a life-threatening illness a year back, he has slowly been re-educating his body in the ways of winning by stealth. Brian raced through the first game and held on to take a close second, although Gary was starting to exploit the chinks with a combination of anticipation and tight boasts (his trademark). By the middle of the 3rd, it was clear that Brian had no answers to the rejuvenated veteran and Gary cruised to a morale boosting come back win.
So, with newcomer Allan showing the rapid development of his raw talent to blast away Andrew at 5, it was left to Knole's silver fox Chris to keep the home side's candle burning. What a tussle! Mark, recently drafted in from a tougher part of the world and apparently hewn from granite, went off like an express train and forced Chris into submission for two games. Then, early in the third, he appeared to be running out of steam. On a sweltering night, he may just have peaked too soon. Chris held his game together - and in spite of Mark summoning amazing reserves of determination in the fourth, Chris looked marginally more likely to prevail. A combination of excellent marking and surpisingly quick reactions saw him home - to great rejoicing for the home team. KP's mid table finish looks assured after this gargantuan effort. |
