Report: | Oh, the sweet scent of victory after weeks of defeat...
Bromley's charge was led by Mark who had the psychological advantage of having beaten Chris in the summer. He worked the rallies patiently, moving well and mixing his shots in the first game and seemed to be cruising. Wobbles came in the second and fourth games when Chris sharpened his serve and introduced more boasts, Mark becoming a tad impetuous at the same time. But Mark is fit these days and wore down Chris before he could make a 5th game.
Gary showed hardly any sign of his police Christmas party of the previous evening as he moved nimbly around the court retrieving almost everything that Jerry produced, resourceful though his is. Last-minute replacement for Brian, Gary brought some Christmas cheer when he gave Bromley a 2-0 lead.
Spirits took a dive in the next 30 min when first Tim and then Kevin lost their first games. Was this to be another 2-3 loss? Tim seemed to have lost his timing completely while Patrick was sharp and strong. Then Tim found first his drop shot and then his tight drives, putting Patrick under pressure for the first time. Finally some clever lobs clinched the advantage and Tim won in 4.
Kevin, who has recently snatched some spectacular defeats out of certain victories, seemed to be on for a repeat as the games moved to 2 apiece and Mike never knowingly gives up. But Kevin held his nerve and his timing to romp home in the 5th.
What could Kelvin do against JJ? Lethal damage it seemed when he caught JJ's arm with a follow-through! After some tussles in the front corners the boys opened up with more variety but on the night Kelvin was consistently quicker to both anticipate JJ's shots and put them away.
It has to be said that Knole Park fielded a weaker team than usual but take nothing away from Bromley 3rds: it was a fine performance all round. A nice Christmas present for the captain! |
