Away Report: | Good news for Knole - local derby honours shared for the season - but it was tough.
With Mike and Karl seemingly having eased up in their training over Christmas, Niall and Jerry quickly made mincemeat of them to give the visitors (!) a 2-0 lead. Then new boy David, fresh off the injury list (ironically having pulled up lame against James in a friendly last time they met, took a 1-0 lead with some flicks and tricks and looked to be heading for a comfortable 2-0 lead. However, James is the Wildernesse rising star and showed why, with stamina and consistency clawing his way back and eventually taking the 3rd and 4th games with ease. David will be better after a few more weeks, though and will trouble many a lesser opponent before the winter is out.
KP still must have expected to cruise home, though, with their speed man Chris at a lowly 4th string having been confidently told by his captain not to worry about Peter. I believe it's called 'the mockers'. Peter showed enough speed of his own and better tactics to outwit Chris in 3, in spite of a late threat of a comeback in the 3rd.
Luckily, Wildernesse's 5th string had not shown up. Surely, even tin man Mark F couldn't manage to lose to an absentee. No, wait! Mark J stepped up and volunteered to play on one leg. Drat, and double drat. Coz, as we all know, Mark F can make a good fist of trying to lose to wounded tigers. Then we all relaxed as he hit 9 straight winners against a stationary Mark J - put the points in our pockets and prepared for the pub. Wait for it - if you hit the ball back to Johnson standing still on the T, he will be able to reach it. Games 2 and 3 to Wildernesse - thank you vey much. Then 9 more winners for Knole and a slightly tense mixture of the earlier swings saw Mark F scrape home.
Hmmm - they'd make a reasonable team if they took the best bits of both. Watch this space.
