Report: | So after a successful campaign last season, Park Langley's 'development' team have found themselves in division 3 and looking to start strong. A slight shuffle in the order and for the first time ever, fielding a team with a max age of 26!
First on court Rich vs. Andy
A firm welcome to the division for the author here as Andy went about his own self acclaimed "awkward bastard style" and fully deserving to take the first game with some crisp low drives and sharp cross courts. Slowly managing to find some rhythm, the back of the court and thanks to a couple of dodgy calls, Rich managed to come through in 4 to make it 1-0 on the night.
Next door "Slow start" Tom vs. Chris
Tom lived up to his name in this one, loving as he does, to start from 2-0 down so very often! That said, he was unlucky not to take the first one after a close game up to 7-7 before Chris closed it out. Sure enough Tom came to life in the 3rd and 4th, tightening the drives and getting into his flow, retrieving a lot and stepping up to volley at every chance. The 5th couldn't have been any closer, and tension was added with a contentious let/stroke decision being debated at 8-9. In the end Chris snuck it home but fantastic effort from both players and highly entertaining match! Score on the night at 1-1
Battle of the future; Robbie vs. Ryan
Not for the first time, the future of Kent squash stepped on to court to do battle. Robbie, fresh from his tournament victory at the weekend and having scampered in from football made a fast start, going 6-0 up before Ryan settled down and the tight lengths and pressure drives started to take effect. Having managed to just close it out, the rest of the match followed a similar pattern but let's be clear, these 2 show most of us how squash should be played with ease! 2-1 on the night
Paul vs. Tom
Didn't see too much of this game due to marking duties but it appeared that Paul was doing his normal style of playing horizontally to retrieve to inhumane levels, whilst Tom appeared to be strolling around, cracking the ball of the middle of the strings. A good contest but in the end Tom had a bit too much and closed out comfortably 3-0.
Nilen vs. Graham
So, all down to the last string to decide the match. Nilen's been in fine form and started in typically fast fashion, taking the first 9-4. Graham, who has played "4 times in 2013", appeared to start getting back into the swing of things, although not quite enough to nick the 2nd, put enough pressure on Nil to take the 3rd game and set up a pretty dramatic 4th. No fewer than 25 hand in/hand outs at 6-3, Nilen eventually found the middle of his racket again and closed out to seal the win for PL.
Very enjoyable evening of squash and a good start to the season. Enjoyable conversation and banter in the bar afterwards, with Andy confirming to us he's not in an e-drugs cartel despite what the powder run email may suggest!
Last quick mention, despite the surrealness of playing at home on a Thursday, it sure as hell beats playing at Old Dunstonians! Look forward to the return |
