Report: | Mark at 5 not on the nomination list, a late call up by all accounts.
A sweaty nights squash to say the least, and I was only watching! Fair play to all those involved, with the temperature as it was even the knock ups looked tiring. That said, with the first match only going on just after 8, the feared late finish that is usual on nights like this didn't happen with 5 very one sided games finishing in little over 90 mins.
First on Gabriel and Alan and the formers game is designed for heat. Unorthodox and likely to pick everything up with a bouncy ball it lead to a comfortable 3-0 win.
Matt and Keith went on the other court and the early exchanges promised a lenghty encounter as so happens with these two. However, Matt's consistency was the key for most of the match as well as Keith making a large amount of unforced errors, particularly giving strokes away with loose drives. When I asked Craig why his dad looked more rusty than I've seen him in a while, the response was "cos he spends all his time on bloody holiday!", the tan suggested he might not have been exaggerating.
Meanwhile Alisdair was making short work of the 1st and going into a healthy lead in the second. Mark worked his way back into the game with some good winners and Alisdair's concentration seemed to wane. Alisdair's growing maturity showed through and he took a game it would have been very easy to drop and swiftly wrapped up the third.
With the match in the bag for Beckenham, Ollie and Craig went on. Craig looked sharp from the word "play" and Ollie equally sluggish, the heat potentially affecting someone who's coming back from a couple of years off. Ollie showed glimpses in the second and third but ultimately Craig was too quick and too consistent.
Last on were Warwick and Simon and despite it being a dead rubber they had a crowd, though that might have been due to the fact that not even the first people on had stopped sweating yet. Much like all the other games it was fairly one way traffic, Simon showing some lovely touch with his volley drops and Warwick not being able to turn many hand-outs into points.
A slightly strange scoreline in the end but the short matches were understandable. Let's hope it's a lot cooler for my comeback next week!! |
