Report: | First on were Guy and Steve, Guy was a late replacement but isn't a bad one as things go! Always going to be a guaranteed win down in Div 3 and the scoreline suggests as much. Steve not feeling too well on the day, a recurring theme, but admitted he'd have had to be playing a lot better to make any sort of contest.
On the other court Si and Andy went on, always some good banter on court. Andy playing well and Si's back meaning a very straightforward win for Andy. Apologies for the minor strop but after 6 months of injury, it coming back when you think you're ok is a bit frustrating!
Next were Paul and Kevin. An epic first game left both exhausted and it was clear this would probably go down to fitness. The second was very tight with Kevin showing some signs of cramp. He managed to pull through though with a string of points from 4-4 to take it. A breather was clearly in order in the third and Paul wrapped it up with as much ease as the score suggests. The 4th was what Hollywood would call epic at first (i.e. tight but devoid of much quality). Hand-out followed hand-out but then after after a while Kevin found his winners and closed the match out.
Meanwhile Alisdair and Mike were having a tight match themselves. I didn't see a lot but Mike took a tight first couple before Alisdair's fitness and growing composure saw him through. Another good win against a tricky opponent.
Last on were Simon and Ollie, a strange match to say the least. Simon apparently wasn't sure he wanted to play as was feeling under the weather, however I'm sure once he saw the colour of Ollie on the night (kermit green) he was probably pleased he showed up. Both played some quality winners at times but ultimately Ollie just did well not to throw up even before the knock-up and Simon took a reasonably comfortable win withstanding a few lapses in concentration.
An enjoyable evening with old mates as always with this team, and always a pleasure to return Kevin's hospitality from the first half ;-) |
