Report: | Warwick's probable last match in the UK for a while happened to be a bit of a mismatch in the end with Beckenham at near enough full strength against a very depleted PL4. No opponent for your author in the end, though I'm definitely still claiming the win at the end of season count up!
First on were Guy v Nilen and Lee and Robbie. A contrast in matches as Guy put Nilen to the sword whereas Lee and Robbie went all the way, so to speak. Nilen was disappointed not to get a point but I think felt slightly better about things by the end of the night when we convinced him that Guy could probably have beaten all of us back to back to the same score!
Robbie played a wonderful game of squash against Lee, allowing him to smash the ball around and recognising he'd just get everything back at that pace. Lee, after a bit of advice from your commentator, slowed things down a bit in the 4th and took it quite comfortably. The 5th was tense to say the least, Robbie took an early 5-1 advantage before Lee pegged him back. Robbie then went 8-5 up and it looked all over. Lee picked the pace up again and this time it worked bringing it back to 8-8. The next twist caused controversy in the bar afterwards with most people agreeing that Nilen had agreed with the decision to call 1 but denial from the man himself. As it was, Robbie unfortunately mis-hit it into the tin and the match was over in a fashion it didn't deserve. Full credit to Robbie though, not many would have expected that scoreline and he fought really hard and played excellently to get so close.
Matt and Toby were next on and I missed the first two but three and four were indicative by all accounts with Matt's error count being slightly less and taking a 3-1 win.
Last were Michael and Warwick. Early exchanges indicated a potentially close one but Warwick managed to find some consistent winners to take victory in what will probably prove to be his last match before moving to Singapore. The horrifically mishit winner on match point perhaps proving a fitting end to his time with the side!
A win to end Warwick's reign at the club. He'll be missed, to some extent, and Nilen, really don't worry about it! |
