Report: | Beckenham, as strong as they can be these days, met an under-strength Bexley side with the former battling relegation and the latter looking to close the gap at the top of the table.
First on were Guy and Jack and as ever with Guy this went the way all expected. Jack fought well and the points he won were done with some impressive squash, few hit the ball so sweetly.
After that Si and Adam went on, Si playing at 5 for the first time in living memory and Adam playing up a fair way lead to a one-sided encounter. It took half a game for Si to get into a rhythm in the first but from 4-6 down didn't lose a rally. Si was able to dominate the T in the second and third and lead to a relatively comfortable win.
On the other court Paul and Louis had gone on midway through the 1's and finished after the 5's, a cracking contest. Plain sailing for Louis in the first two but Paul is a great match player and pulled it back to 2-2 looking the fitter player. From 4-3 down though, Louis went on the rampage to go 8-4 up and looked to be taking the match. Paul wasn't going to give up though and pulled back to 8-8, saving several match balls. 9-8 went Louis only for Paul to pull it back again and take the match on a very skillful (0.1%) kill. Match to Beckenham but at this stage of the season there are no dead rubbers.
Alistair against Keith was next on and Keith took the first with aplomb, some great volleying and keeping the ball low and hard had Al struggling. Second game and Al found his line and length to cur the volleying down and the pace round court drew some errors. All square in due course. The third ebbed and flowed with each player getting in front but Al managed to forge on from 7-6 up to take it and then was utterly dominant in the 4th, taking a good win.
Last on were Neil and Scott and Neil was suffering for his steak, chips and white wine lunch! Scott played a cracking game though and breezed into a 2 game lead. At 6-2 up in the third it seemed all over but perhaps a lack of concentration combined with some cracking winners from Neil lead to the third being dropped before things were wrapped up in the 4th.
A very important win for Beckenham against one of the front runners, taking full advantage of getting a strong side out. |
