Report: | In what Sky Sports would have undoubtedly billed as a 40-pointer, Beckenham and Poultwood came together for a key match in the relegation scrap. Beckenham at what constitutes full strength these days with Poultwood missing a couple and calling up John, only recently back from injury. Victory would make neither safe but would certainly put the winners in control of their own destiny.
First on, Guy made short shrift of Mark in a not all too surprising result. As with most of Guy's opponents, Mark chased everything and played the odd cracking winner but found the possibility of doing it in consecutive rallys too much. 1-0 Beckenham.
At the same time went on The Match That Would Never End. Neil and Simon both clearly wanted their monies worth, Neil being comfortably up at 7-1 in each of the first two but Simon fighting back only to fall short. Simon then took the third easily before things got a bit epic, Simon, having been 6-1 up, took the fourth on his 4th game ball with Neil squandering 3 match balls. The 5th played out as the most even game of the match, no more than a couple of points between them but Simon got to match point at 8-6 first. From there though, Neil summoned the energy to go straight through and seal a 2-0 lead for Beckenham.
In the meantime, Paul and Chris had gone on and played out a very entertaining encounter. Paul changing things up in the early stages to good effect against a rusty looking Chris meant a 2-0 lead was quickly forthcoming. Chris started to find his range from then on, and when he wasn't hitting his winners just decided to belt the bejeezus out of it. The added pace saw Paul struggle a bit and Chris took the third. The effort seemed to tell in the 4th as Paul raced to 8-2 with Chris looking beaten. Again Chris upped the pace and Paul suddenly didn't look like he could find the winning point. A couple of tired errors from Chris ultimately proved fatal and Paul sealed the match for Beckenham.
Damage limitation for Poultwood from here on and unfortunately for them the 5's ended reasonably one sided. Si, having heroically marked two matches, was half asleep for the first game but managed to wake up enough to sneak it before closing out a fairly comfortable win. Fair play to John though, not long back from a bad collarbone injury in June.
Al and Craig were on the other court and this was a game of two halves. Al took the first two comfortably before Craig pegged him back. I only saw the last but Al was uncharacteristically struggling, feeling under the weather by all accounts, and Craig took full advantage to sneak a tight 5th.
A great win for Beckenham, only dropping one point as a team, though still some very important games to be played over the coming few weeks. Poultwood and Cascades play each other in their game in hand which could yet play a massive part. Not to mention the Beckenham derby next week! |
