Report: | Always an enjoyable evening when we welcome the local rivals to Beckenham Towers, both sides with a lot to play for with Beckenham seeking safety and PL4 chasing promotion and looking to bounce back from some highly dubious administrative decisions going against them of late.
First on were James and Andy and this was a cracker from the start. Andy the better technical player but James the better mover, this lead to a real contrast in styles. Andy shaded the first two and the experience seemed to be telling before James pulled the third back comfortably. The fourth was going Andy's way at 4-1 and 6-2 but James hung in and it went right to the wire. Andy had match balls at 8-7 and 9-8 but James held his nerve to send it to 5. The 5th was one-way traffic in the end, James' fitness proving too much.
On the other court were Alisdair and Kevin, didn't see any of it but from the talk in the bar Kevin was pleased to get out in 3, each game could have easily gone the other way. It will be interesting to see how a rematch goes in around 6 months.
Next were Guy and Gina and Guy was his usual ruthless self. This contest will no doubt get closer over the coming years but for now Guy was taking no chances. 2-1 Beckenham.
Si and Dave on the other court and Si was always going to be up against it with Dave unsurprisingly unbeaten this season. Dave's ability to hit winners from just about anywhere, accompanied by Si regressing to a tinning machine, lead Dave to 1-0 and 8-3 up in the second. Si then seemed to realise that if you keep the ball up for more than 2 shots in a row you tend to do a bit better and this seemed to take Dave by surprise. A fight back to 8-8 and Dave called 1, then played a loose drop. Stroke, tin, 2-0 Dave.Lesson not learnt the 3rd was plain sailing for Dave. 2-2 on the night.
Last were Neil and Simon. Simon raced through the first and was doing the same with the second before Neil staged an ill-fated mini comeback. Neil took that form into the 3rd though and looked on top at that stage. Simon kept his cool and saw it through in the 4th, sealing the win for PL4.
Good to see some old faces in the crowd as well, the night only slightly ruined by Dave pointing out that it's been 20 years since we both played each other for the first time. Bloody Hell. |
