Report: | A close match which could have gone either way. Dulwich witnessed the birth of a future star with the debut of Henry Montieth at No4. His first game for the club was a compelling 5 setter with Mr Coles. Both players produced good squash but Henry's youth and determination saw him through. Ade at No2 took on Mr O'Brien. It became clear from the outset that these two were trying to create a world record for the number of boasts in a single rally. I counted a 15 shot rally which included no less then 9 boasts. However, after losing the 1st game Ade gave himself a stern talking to (or was it me threatening to move into his house and live with him) and came back to win the next three with some good squash.
Jon-Marc gave Chris a workout at No1. Chris's ability to place the ball deep in the corners proved to be the differance.Jon-Marc produced some great recoveries and covered every board on the court but his valiant effort fell short.
The evergreen Tony Brown had Roald Piper wondering which way to turn during the first game of their No3 match. Once again Tony gave the watching crowd an exhibition in how to confuse and frustrate an opponant. Unfortunatley for Tony, Roald was quick on the uptake and began to tighten up his game and then make Tony move his well seasoned body around the court. Eventually youth overcame experience and Roald won in four.
Steve Hall took two games to warm up before he made a fight of his match with Dave at 5. By that time it was a bit too much to pull back but Steve was able to get a game and the two men expended a great deal of energy. Dave displayed some canny Scottishness by not giving Steve too many chances.
The highlight of the evening then came. After many years of ducking and diving Steve Hall finnally cooked a meal. It was quite and emotional experiance for those present as this was the 1st time he had set foot in the kitchen at the club for several years. A memorable meal. Always nice to host Blackheath. No shame losing a close one to the league leaders. |
