Report: | A tremendous top of the table clash early on in the season saw a close finish with Bexley taking the match 3-2. First on was the third rubber. A fast first game, maybe too fast for the older player set the scene. The second game saw the front wall being used to good effect to vary the pace of the game and Ben using his youth to his advantage by trying to speed it up. A big effort from game ball down brought a home win to draw the match at 1-1. There followed two more close games with all the shots being pulled from the coaching book but after an hour on court the Kent under 19 player prevailed to win.
Meanwhile Ben Wetherill had taken the easy route to victory grinding James down with his power play 3-0 for the match to draw level.
On went the first string game and Colin stormed into a lead only to be pulled back with series of tins before taking the first game. There were some strong rallies and both men worked hard around the front of the court but Scott's match fitness told in the end with him winning 3-1 and putting Bexley ahead 2-1.
Dan went on at fifth string against Lilly and I did not see much of this but Dan proved too strong for his 15 year old opponent winning 3-0 and levelling the match for Dulwich.
The decider between Vic and James saw James start with good control winning 9-4. However Vic is a slow starter and has two commendable results before today in five set matches. The second game was all but Vic's but being unable to put the ball away she lost 9-10 and a similar story followed in the third with James taking it 10-8 notwithstanding Vic holding strong positions in rallies but ultimately not being able to increase the pace and play the killer shot to win the match.
A close match and an enjoyable curry afterwards. I can see some of these Bexley juniors playing in div 1 in a couple of years time. |
