Report

Report:Not a great opening to the summer season by Dulwich. But a good one for the Old E's. Having said that, there were some encouraging points for Dulwich. Jon-Marc Gowan returned to the Dulwich team at No 1 for the first time in two seasons, and had a marvelous 5 setter against Keith Hibberd the OE captain. Both players were evenly matched and had many fine rallies. But Keith's dogged determination won the game for him in the 5th.
I was unable to give Mr Perkins a game at No2 due to him being far better than me so the less said about that the better, for my confidence. Jim Turner and Mehmet Yusef had a classic battle at three. Jim stormed into an early 2 game lead and looked to be heading for victory. However, Mehmet finally figured out Jim's awkward style and began a phenomanal comeback which saw him triumph 3-2.The high point for Dulwich was the debut of Steve Aherne at 4 against Richard Mason. Steve made a good start ,taking the first game but then lost the next two, to some very good play by Richard. However, it appeared that Steve had given himself a good talking to and he came out all fired up in the 4th which he took comfortabley. In the 5th Steve was able to take a healthy lead and lead at 7/2 but then it seemed he began to choke at the thought of winning his debut match, and Richard was able to close the gap. Steve did get himself together to close out the game. It may have had something to do with me pointing out the possible consequenses to him if he lost. I know where he lives!. At 5 Kirk Page was just a bit too good for the gallant Steve Hall, who made a fight of it but came up short. OE were worthy winners and good hosts. However, we look forward to the return leg and are determined to avenge this loss.
